The Original ITNAmerica Model for Community Transportation
ITN Affiliates are the flagship program model of ITNAmerica. First launched in 1995 with ITNPortland, this original model was designed to replicate the comfort and convenience of private automobile ownership—offering older adults and people with mobility challenges a dignified and reliable alternative to driving. Built to be sustainable, resilient, and deeply rooted in local community support, the model delivers a premier transportation experience for older adults and people with mobility challenges.
The model provides rides for any purpose, uses a combination of volunteer and paid drivers, and operates as a nonprofit rooted in the local community.
Riders become dues-paying members, and Personal Transportation Accounts™ allow them to store and use ride credits for cashless transactions in vehicles—an innovation ITNAmerica developed more than a decade before the rise of rideshare apps.
ITN Affiliates are built for long-term sustainability and strong community engagement. Each program is independently operated but part of a shared national network working to expand access to transportation and support aging in place.
