Our Mission

ITNAmerica promotes lifelong mobility for older adults and people with mobility challenges. We support sustainable, community-based transportation by leading a national transportation network grounded in research, policy analysis, technology, and education.

ITNAmerica is the first and only national nonprofit transportation network for older adults and people with mobility challenges. Through a growing network of nonprofit transportation providers, ITNAmerica has supported more than 1.6 million arm-through-arm, door-through-door rides across the United States.

Innovative by design, ITNAmerica takes a holistic, system-level approach to addressing the unmet transportation needs of older adults and people with mobility challenges. By collaborating across sectors—including nonprofits, government, business, and philanthropy—ITNAmerica works to advance community-based transportation solutions that are sustainable, data-informed, and built for long-term impact.

ITNAmerica provides the technology, infrastructure, training, and experience to support a national network of nonprofit and government-affiliated transportation providers operating on a shared platform. National programs such as America’s Volunteer Driver Center, ITNCountry, and Rides in Sight—an updated, searchable online database and toll-free hotline featuring more than 10,000 transportation providers—expand access to transportation and promote scalable, community-based solutions that respond to local needs.

ITNAmerica began as a response to a system failure. In 1988, founder Katherine Freund’s three-year-old son was seriously injured by an 84-year-old driver. Rather than blaming the individual, Freund recognized a broader challenge: a transportation system that lacked the capacity to safely support an aging population.

Determined to create change, Freund earned a graduate degree in public policy and studied senior transportation through the lens of resources, logistics, policy, and technology. From this work, she created the blueprint for ITNAmerica —a model designed to provide safe, reliable, and affordable transportation for older adults while preserving dignity and independence.

Today, ITNAmerica’s national network includes ITN Affiliates, ITNCountry communities, a consortium of Trusted Transportation Providers, and national resources such as Rides in Sight. What began as a local solution has become a scalable, replicable national model for innovation in community-based transportation.
